ASEAN was formed in 08 August,
1967 by 5 members, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippine, Singapore, and Thailand to
promote the political and economic cooperation, and regional stability. Brunei
joined as 6th member in 08 January, 1985. As a fully member 7th,
Vietnam joined ASEAN in 28 July, 1995. Laos and Myanmar were admitted to join
as ASEAN in 23 July, 1997, and Cambodia joined as 10th member in 30
April, 1999.
ASEAN community creates 3 Main
Pillars, the Political-Security Community, Socio-Culture Community, and
Economic Community.
Adjectives:
The ASEAN Declaration states that
the aims and purposes of ASEAN are:
1- To
accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in region
through a joint efforts in the spirit of equality and partnership to strengthen
foundation of prosperity of community and ASEAN,
2- and to promote regional peace and stability through respecting justice and rule of law
in relationship among countries in the region and adherence to the principles
of the United Nations Charter. In 1995, the ASEAN Heads of State and Government
re-affirmed that "Cooperative peace and shared prosperity shall be the
fundamental goals of ASEAN."
